Recently, Bluewave Marine Ingredients, was looking for a reliable, reconditioned boiler for their growing operation in Lima, Peru.  Lima is a hotbed for fish oil production and Bluewave was looking to capitalize on its revolutionary and patented, production techniques.  Mark Rottman, COO, and the team and Bluewave were looking to keep their costs down so they could spend money on important things like running their business.  Larry Erdman, sales engineer at Powerhouse, was able to talk with Mark and understand their exact load requirements for the present and future needs.

Powerhouse – The District Steam Utility Partner

Powerhouse is in the rental boiler business.  We typically service industrial and commercial customers across the United States, South America and the World.  The types of installations that use our rental boilers vary from heating to tank cleaning to sterilization to production all the way up to power generation.

Increasingly, Powerhouse has provided its Portable Boiler Rooms when needed to District Steam Utilities.

Why do District Steam Utilities Need Rental Boilers?

• Emergencies, like Hurricane Sandy
• Scheduled Repairs – Loop generally taken down in large sections sometimes disabling multiple customers
• Upgrades to customer equipment
• City Renovation work – street repairs, water line repairs, sewer line repairs all necessitating interruption to district steam service.  District steam lines are generally run adjacent to other utility lines.

What is District Steam?

District Steam is steam that is provided by a centralized heating source and distributed through a network of piping to end users.  In the United States, most major cities, including New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore and Boston utilize District Steam systems.  This allows for high rise buildings and other facilities to take delivery of high pressure steam and hot water without having high pressure boilers on their facilities.  They simply have pressure reducing equipment and an internal system for distributing the incoming steam throughout the facility.  This makes for a safer building and saves valuable space, which is extremely limited in downtown areas.

As with any steam delivery system, redundancy isn’t always easy to come by.  With a district steam loop, the easiest redundant steam system is usually a portable boiler room.  Powerhouse portable rooms can be easilly installed adjacent to buildings and easily piped to basement delivery systems, taking over for district steam systems within hours, if required.

Powerhouse has over 20 years experience working with steam utilities, such as Trigen/Veolia Energy in Philadelphia, PA.  Also, Powerhouse recently provided a Portable Boiler to the Empire State Building when the New York City District Steam Utility, ConEd, lost some of its production capabilities due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.  Powerhouse Portable Boiler Rooms have been used by District Heating Utilities in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, Trenton and oversees in Columbia, Venezuela and Peru.

American Red Cross

The damage caused by Hurricane Sandy created an historic need for services and equipment in NY, NJ and surrounding areas never before seen.  Powerhouse responded to this emergency by providing our portable boiler rooms and emergency service technicians to affected areas before, during and after the storm.

The additional business gained by Powerhouse due to the storm has allowed us to make a donation to the one organization that helps more directly-affected-individuals than any other, the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross has already spent more than $70 million helping those affected by Hurricane Sandy – read more about their Hurricane Relief Programs.  The Red Cross estimates it will take approximately 3 years for complete recovery to occur for all those affected from Hurricane Sandy.

So far, in response to Hurricane Sandy, the Red Cross has:

A rental boiler was needed at a building, that had an outage, during a storm.  Typical? No, not at all.  Nothing about this was typical.  All circumstances here were historic, and will likely never occur again…

World’s Largest Portable Boiler at the Empire State Building

The Empire State Building needed help.  They needed a rental boiler.

Well, the Empire State Building had never required a rental boiler before. They have had experience being attacked by the likes of King-Kong, but a rental boiler – what the heck is that?!  In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy the Empire State building was without power for some time and without steam, which the only needed for you know, heat.  And with temperatures dipping below 40 degrees, they needed a solution.

How do you heat the entire Empire State Building?  Only one way – with the World’s Largest Portable Boiler Room.  You give it city water, fuel and electric and you got your heat – and oh by the way – it only takes up a single lane of traffic (could’ve fit on the sidewalk it weren’t for the scaffolding – but hey, building

improvements are a good thing).  Powerhouse is the only company that has these boiler rooms and we got the call.

Timothy J. Clancy, Director of Operations at the Empire State Building Company, LLC, made the request:

“This matter is extremely important to protect the iconic Empire State Building in this time of great tragedy in New York City.”

Powerhouse delivered the PBR to the Empire State Building immediately to the Empire State Building in ready-to-fire condition, as requested.

Mr. Clancy had this to say about Powerhouse’s efforts:

“In one of the worst storms in New York history, Powerhouse was able to supply and deliver an 800 HP Portable Boiler Room within 24 hours of request.  A great job and excellent customer service and follow up.”

While we hope there is never another outage at the Empire State Building, we took our responsibility to protect this American landmark seriously and were satisfied we were able to provide equipment to protect it.

Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast, especially New York City and areas of Northern New Jersey with record setting rain fall and subsequent flooding.

Powerhouse was ready, and staged rental equipment, auxiliaries and boiler technicians in anticipation for the storm.  Even before the storm, we were sending out portable boiler rooms to Philadelphia, New York City, Northern New Jersey and other areas anticipating flooding and power outages.

After the storm hit, things were worse than expected, especially for New York City and North Jersey.  The main district steam utility in NYC, ConEdison, lost service at several of their substations and were unable to supply steam and electricity to several areas of the city, requiring hospitals, schools, apartment buildings, offices and other facilities to seek a direct supplier for their temporary utility needs – enter Powerhouse.

Portable Boiler Room at Sam Adams Brewery

Sam Adams Brewery in Allentown, PA required a portable boiler room due to a boiler malfunction and Powerhouse got the call.

Within hours of receiving an emergency call for the brewery, Powerhouse immediately mobilized the World’s Largest Portable Boiler Room to handle the primary steam load at the plant.

This unit provides 27,600 PPH of steam with complete feedwater treatment capabilities inside a steel container, complete with removable chassis.   All connections to the unit are made on the exterior of the container, allowing for easy connections.  In this case, the boiler was installed in only a few hours and was able to be put on-line immediately thereafter.

This quick response and easy installation allowed the brewery to be back online in less than 24 hours after the boiler first malfunctioned – saving costly downtime.
